What is it?

CardioVision 2020 is a community health initiative. The initiative, developed by a team of community partners, seeks to improve the heart health of all Olmsted County residents. Our goal is to promote a smoke-free environment, heart-healthy nutrition habits and a physically active lifestyle for all children and adults living in Olmsted County.

Why are we doing this?

Heart disease is an epidemic in the United States. Death rates in Olmsted County are far higher than in Belgium, Italy, Spain, France and Japan. Health providers know that eliminating tobacco use, reducing saturated fat in the diet, controlling high blood pressure and high cholesterol and engaging in physical activity lowers the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. These activities also lower the risk of developing diabetes, cancer and other debilitating diseases.

CardioVision 2020 Five Personal Goals

  • Five servings of fruits and/or vegetables per day and choose only lean or extra lean meats and low-fat dairy products.
  • 30 minutes of physical activity most, if not all, days of the week.
  • Tobacco-free lifestyle and zero exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.
  • Total cholesterol <200 mg/dl (LDL <100 mg/dl for individuals with coronary heart disease).
  • Blood pressure <130/85.

You can participate by working toward the personal goals listed above. If we all participate, together we can achieve ideal heart health within a generation – by 2020. That is our vision!

Participation is easy
  • Choose fresh fruit and vegetables over fried foods.
  • Take a 30 minute after-dinner walk.
  • When you call to make a dinner reservation, ask if the restaurant is smoke-free.
If it’s not, don’t eat there and tell the management why.
  • Monitor your cholesterol and blood pressure.
