| With the alarming increase in school-age smoking, the Minnesota Smoke-Free Coalition realizes that
prevention must begin early. That’s why it has offered a special Smoke-Free Kindergarten Class Project
called “Clean Air for Kids and Growing Things” to Minnesota schools over the last 12 years. More
than 5300 students in over 90 schools participated in 1999. The project features a classroom activity packet for a week of hands-on smoke-free learning, visual reinforcements (including a T-shirt for each child) to drive home the importance of smoke-free living, and information for parents to help them protect their kids from secondhand smoke. The Coalition provides all materials at cost, and doesn’t charge for shipping. Many schools fund the project through PTA or community donors, but even more are unable to find the money ($4 per student) to take advantage of this opportunity. If you or your organization would like to help more kids get started on a healthy, smoke-free life (perhaps by sponsoring a class in your neighborhood), contact the Coalition by e-mail at sfc2000@mtn.org or call 651-641-1223. |
