Official Contest Rules

Goal: For each individual to exercise at least 150 minutes a week.

Rationale and background: Being physically active for at least 30 minutes on most days is one of Cardiovision 2020's heart-healthy lifestyle goals. It can be as easy as walking, jogging, biking, or playing tennis. Just set a daily goal to move your feet (and your body) to a healthier beat. Whatever physical activity gets your heart pumping, do it for 30 minutes at least 5 times a week and you will qualify for prizes-but even more importantly, you'll be lowering your risk for heart disease and obesity, and helping to improve your overall health and well-being.

Dates: 30 a day: Move Your Feet to a Healthy Beat begins May 1, 2005 and ends on June 11. Winners will be announced on June 18 at the American Heart Association Heart Walk in Rochester.

Eligibility: Anyone employed or residing in Olmsted County, Minnesota can participate in 30 a day: Move Your Feet to a Healthy Beat.

Registration: Registration is exclusively through the Cardiovision 2020 web site. To be eligible for prizes, each individual should organize or join a team of 2 or more participants and register their team on the CardioVision 2020 web site. All team names must be registered by May 15, 2005.

Prizes: Participants who personally average at least 150 minutes per week will be entered in a drawing for a free airline ticket on Northwest Airlines, good for anywhere in the contiguous U.S. (courtesy Bursch Travel American Express, to be used by July 1, 2006). Participants who average at least 150 minutes per week who are on Teams that average at least 150 minutes per week per member will also be entered into a raffle for the $500 grand prize and other miscellaneous prizes. Miscellaneous prizes will be awarded in the general, family, and youth team categories.

Activity logging: Activity must be logged on the CardioVision 2020 web site. Individuals will be able to log their exercise minutes daily on the web site beginning on May 1, 2005. Minutes can be logged retroactively. All minutes must be logged on the web site by 5:00 p.m. on June 14, 2005.

Verification: No attempt will be made to verify the number of minutes logged. Each individual will be responsible for accurately reporting their activity.

Eligibility for the airline ticket raffle: To be eligible for the airline ticket from Bursch Travel American Express, a participant must live or work in Olmsted County and must personally log an average of at least 150 minutes of exercise per week. All minutes must be logged on the web site by 5:00 p.m. on June 14, 2005.

Eligibility for $500 grand prize raffle: To be eligible to win the grand prize and other miscellaneous prizes, a participant must live or work in Olmsted County, must personally log an average of at least 150 minutes of exercise per week, and must participate on a team that averages at least 150 minutes of exercise per week per team member. All minutes must be logged on the web site by 5:00 p.m. on June 14, 2005.

Announcement of winners: The winners of the drawings will be announced on June 18, 2005, at the American Heart Association Heart Walk in Rochester. Winners do not have to be present. The names and pictures of the winners will be posted on the CardioVision 2020 web site after June 18.

Updating the rules: The rules will be updated by the CardioVision 2020 working group as necessary and without notice. Final interpretation of the rules is at the discretion of the CardioVision 2020 working group.

  • Q Who is eligible to enter?
    A Anyone who lives or works in Olmsted County, Minnesota is eligible to enter.
    Q How do I join a team?
    A You must obtain the team password from a member of the team you want to join. Then register or log on (if you've already registered) and click on “Join an Existing Team”. You may also start your own team after logging on by registering the team name and password under “Create a New Team”.
    Q Can I be on more than one team?
    A No. You may switch teams up until May 15, but you can only be on one team at a time.
    Q Do all my team members have to reach their 150 minutes a week goal to be eligible for the drawing for $500?
    A No. Your team must average 150 minutes per week per team member for you to be eligible for the $500 drawing. You must also personally reach the 150 minutes per week goal.
    Q If my team doesn’t reach the goal, but I do individually, can I still be eligible for a prize?
    A Yes. You can still be eligible for the airline ticket raffle.
    Q Do I have to exercise 150 minutes every week, or can I exercise 100 minutes one week and 200 the next?
    A You may exercise different amounts each week as long as you average 150 minutes a week over the contest period.
    Q How many members should there be on a team?
    A Teams must have at least 2 members. There is no maximum number.
    Q Why are the team names password protected?
    A Teams won't want to be loaded up with members who aren't logging their minutes. If you don't know anyone else who has formed a team, go through your addess book and ask your friends. If you still can't find anyone who has formed a team, form your own team. Teams only need a minimum of 2 members.
    Q Can I switch to a different team?
    A You may switch teams or create a new team up until May 15. To switch teams, log in and click on "Switch to a Different Team."
    Q Do I need to exercise together with my team members?
    A No. Team members may exercise on their own, together with other team members, or together with people not on their team. It all counts toward reaching the goal. Each team member is responsible for keeping track of their own minutes each day and logging them on the web site.
    Q Can I count yoga and stretching as physical activity?
    A For most people yoga and active stretching requires about half the energy of walking at 4 mph (see the physical activity compendium at the following website http://prevention.sph.sc.edu/tools/docs/documents_compendium.pdf).

    Please log yoga and stretching at half the number of minutes actually spent.

    The Name

    The contest was given its name, 30 a day: Move Your Feet to a Healthy Beat, through a contest at the Boys & Girls Club in early April. Members also developed potential contest logos, and the winning entry was selected through an on-line vote of Post-Bulletin readers.
