CardioVision 2020 Community Celebration

Fun for the entire family! There will be 4H clowns, Fred Astaire Dance Studio interactive dancing, a grilling demonstration, and much more.

Register to win a variety of prizes, including tickets to a Minnesota Lynx WNBA preseason game. Free information on nutrition, exercise and kicking the nicotine habit. Free bike trail maps of the Rochester area. Free heart-smart box lunches for the first 1,000 people.

Dr. Thomas Kottke to Receive Award
for CardioVision 2020

  • What?

The Champions of Health Awards Program is sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota to honor those people, organizations, or businesses who have gone the extra mile to make the Rochester community a healthier place to live.

Dr. Thomas Kottke, CardioVision 2020's project manager, is one of the first to receive this new award.

An Olympic-theme exhibit at the Rochester Athletic Center will be the setting for the awards ceremony. The public is invited to test their Olympic skills in the Olympic Mini-Decathlon, check out an Olympic athlete's diet, and get their blood pressure and body fat checked. The event is free and open to the general public.

Kick Butts Symposium
at Century High School

  • What?

Kick Butts will train teams of teens and an adult to take the tobacco control message back to their communities.

Kick Butts is a program created by the Minnesota Smoke-Free Coalition to involve youth in reducing tobacco use by their peers. Teens will learn new skills through Kick Butts activities, address a critical health problem that affects them and their peers, engage in community service, and gain leadership experience while educating the communities about the serious nature of tobacco use and of control issues confronting youth. Teens will gain extensive knowledge about health issues related to tobacco and acquire a range of practical skills to work in their own communities to help change attitudes and behaviors about tobacco use.

Training is limited to 100 teens from Olmsted County, Minnesota

CardioVision 2020 Kicks Off
Its Community Health Initiative

  • Who's Invited: Come one, come all!
  • When: Wednesday, June 30, 1999 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • Where: Mayo Park, Mayo Civic Center, 30 Civic Center Drive S.E. in Rochester, MN.(In case of inclement weather, this event will take place in Mayo Civic Auditorium.)

Dr. Louis Sullivan
Keynote Speaker

Dr. Louis W. Sullivan - President of Morehouse School of Medicine; Secretary of Health and Human Services during the Bush Administration, from 1989 to 1993; and host of Frontiers of Medicine on PBS will be in Rochester on June 30 to kick off CardioVision 2020. A staunch proponent of exercise, good nutrition and kicking tobacco use, Dr. Sullivan will deliver the keynote speech at 12:15 p.m.

  • Mime and shadow puppets by a costumed troupe from the Masque Youth Theatre and School performers

  • Booths where guests can learn how they can participate and pick up free maps of Rochester’s bike trails
  • Registration for prizes by collecting a sticker at each booth. Prizes include four free Sesame Street Live tickets and two free round-trip airline tickets to San Francisco
Ameriikan Poijat, the Finnish American Brass Band, based in Northfield, Minn. was specifically invited to provide music as well as to recognize Finland’s role in successfully reducing their extremely high mortality rate from coronary heart disease by promoting community-based prevention measures.
