Kick Butts Symposium
at Century High School

On Saturday, October 30, 1999, 36 Olmsted County teens gathered at Century High School to participate in the first Kick Butts training day to be offered in Rochester.

Under the banner "Tobacco Industry Tactics and How to Conquer Them," teens learned how to control tobacco use in their communities. Armed with hints on developing community and school projects, becoming a spokesperson, advocating policy, dealing with the news media and organizing and educating their communities, participants left energized and better prepared to carry on the battle.

Similar sessions are being held statewide for students ages 14 to17 and advanced training will be offered in December. The State Teen Tobacco Summit will be held in February, 2000.

The Minnesota Smoke-Free 2000 Coalition collaborated with parents, Rochester Public Schools, Olmsted County Public Health Services, Olmsted County’s Anti-Tobacco Coalition-Save Our Children and CardioVision 2020 to produce the Kick Butts program in Olmsted County.

For information about participation in future programs and current activities, contact Becky Hoffman at 507-289-6584.

Special thanks to Daube’s Bakery (a smoke-free restaurant), Cub Foods and Pepsi products for providing refreshments at the event.

CardioVision 2020 Off To A Flying Start

The CardioVision team is delighted to report that our lunchtime kickoff event on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 at Mayo Park was a great success.
  • A diverse crowd of about 850 people attended.
  • The heart-smart lunches were delicious and a big hit.
  • A long line stretched past our three education booths where people learned how they can participate in CardioVision 2020.
  • We will be seeing our colorful CardioVision 2020 T-shirts throughout Olmsted County in the coming days – they were very popular.
  • Ameriikan Poijat, a Finnish American Brass Band, mimes, clowns and games combined to create a festive atmosphere.
  • Keynote speaker, Dr. Louis Sullivan – President of Morehouse School of Medicine; Secretary of Health and Human Services during the Bush Administration, from 1989 to 1993; and host of Frontiers of Medicine on PBS is excited about our vigorous health education project because of our emphasis on community involvement and personal responsibility – key ingredients for success in his view.
  • Rochester's mayor, Chuck Canfield, capped the day's events by proclaiming June 30th CardioVision 2020 Day.
  • We are excited by the number of community organizations who talked to us about ways to partner with us to help achieve our mission of becoming the healthiest county in the nation by 2020. Many of them had great ideas for maintaining excitement and community interest in our project.

Congratulations to our prize winners!
  • Carla Brandel of Byron won two free round-trip airline tickets to San Francisco.
  • Cindy Bahler of Rochester won Four free Sesame Street Live tickets.
Our prize winners are committed to CardioVision 2020 personal goals. Carla and Cindy are both non-smokers who monitor their cholesterol and blood pressure and have no trouble fitting 30 minutes of physical activity on most days. Carla meets her physical activity goal through daily competitive equestrian training. Both women are focusing on improving their food choices to include more fruits and vegetables and low-fat foods.

Congratulations to Carla and Cindy – not only for winning our kickoff event prizes, but for joining with us to make Olmsted County the healthiest county in the nation by 2020.
