Mayo16 Employees Participate in
Lifestyle and Nutrition Challenge

In June and July 2000, CardioVision 2020 sponsored an 8-week worksite challenge with the employees from Mayo16. A total of 139 staff members participated! Everyone came out a winner whether it was through healthier eating, lowering blood pressure or cholesterol, increasing exercise, or weight loss. Pre and post assessment included total cholesterol and blood pressure screening, body weight, dietary and health questionnaires. The worksite challenge promoted the five CardioVision 2020 goals by offering nutrition, physical activity and cardiovascular disease prevention educational seminars. Participation incentives included monetary prizes and promotional items.

It was a successful and fun event! Plans are even in the works for those interested in continuing the challenge. CardioVision 2020 would like to thank all Mayo16 participants, organizers and the prize donators. A special thanks to those who presented at the brown bag sessions. You all made this event happen – keep up the good work!

Each of the following was awarded $20 for being the top category winner:
Greatest Weight Loss: Cathy Altwegg (lost 18 Ibs.)
Most Improved Cholesterol: Sharonne Hayes
Smoking Cessation: Terra Thompson
Most Improved Blood Pressure: Kathy Doty

The six individuals who lost the most weight had a combined total loss of 72 pounds!

Tracy Schinke won the Grand Prize of a night’s stay at the Kahler, drawn from all of those who participated.

The East Side had the greatest loss in weight and improvement in blood pressure. The West Side won out in the decrease in cholesterol and smoking cessation.

One person quit smoking during the challenge, and two others are now working with Nicotine Dependence.

Three participants lowered their cholesterol by 70 points or more and three lowered their blood pressure significantly.

Soldier’s Field All-Comers Track Meets
June 6 – July 18, 2000

Over 100 kids came with their parents for six Tuesday evenings during the summer (June 13 was rained out this year) to compete in track and field events and have FUN!

This year CardioVision 2020 had a table near the track to promote the Personal Challenge and the Walk & Win Program. Those who signed up for the challenge or Walk & Win received a button. At the end of the evening, there was a drawing for free tote bags with the CV2020 logo and goals on it. The kids were given stickers.

Staff attending the events included Steve DeBoer (pictured in the photo to the right), Cathy Brandel, and Gretchen Theis, with cameo appearances by Sharonne Hayes and Randy Thomas. Steve’s, Sharonne’s, and Randy’s children participated in track events. Thanks to all the kids and parents for promoting, “30 minutes of physical activity on most, if not all, days of the week”!"

CardioVision 2020 Community Celebration
a Resounding Success

The CardioVision 2020 Community Celebration held May 12, 2000 was a resounding success. With the musical strains of a Finnish American brass band, Ameriikan Poijat, adding a festive tone to the atmosphere:
  • 800 heart-healthy box lunches were served,
  • 282 area residents completed challenge cards to indicate their commitment to the Five Personal Goals of CardioVision 2020, and
  • 180 people had their total cholesterol measured.
Dr. Pekka Puska, the world pioneer in community-based prevention of cardiovascular disease, shared the inspiring story of his success in eastern Finland during his keynote address. Over 25 years, encouraging the same kinds of lifestyle changes CardioVision 2020 promotes, the North Karelia Project brought the heart attack death rate down by 75%, and cut cancer deaths by 50%.

In addition to having cholesterol levels tested and enjoying heart-healthy box lunches, Community Celebration participants learned about nutrition and exercise.

Nancy Savage (left) of Rochester received the $1,000 Quit & Win prize from CardioVision 2020 leader Dr. Tom Kottke (center) and prevention pioneer Dr. Pekka Puska (right).

Local winners of the Quit & Win contest to stop smoking were also announced. Nancy Savage received the $1,000 prize for remaining smoke-free from April 12 to May 12, while Savath Nhao was the $500 winner and Allison Davies claimed the $250 third prize. Karie Marie Strauss won the $1,000 Supporter prize for helping her mother, Robin Strauss, kick the habit.
Of course, everyone who quit smoking is a financial winner because of the money they will save by not buying cigarettes. More importantly, they are winning by cutting their risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Philip Kinter won the drawing for 2 tickets to a pre-season Minnesota Lynx WNBA game at Mayo Civic Center.
